Getting Started
Before attempting to setup or use TivoRemote, enable the Network Remote Control feature on your DVR – this is what allows the app to communicate with your DVR. You can find this your Tivo menu: ‘Messages & Settings’, ‘Settings’, ‘Remote, Cable Card & Devices’, ‘Network Remote Control’
When you start the TivoRemote app, press the Menu button on your device and goto ‘Settings’. If you have a Series 3 or HD DVR, you can press the Detect DVR button to find your DVR(s). Premiere users will need to add a new DVR manually, until version 1.6 is released.
Once your DVR has been detected, or you have added it manually, you can press the Back button on your device to start using TivoRemote. If you are seeing communication error messages, check out the FAQs below for possible solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will this work with my Time Warner, Comcast/DirecTV Tivo, or <insert Cable/Satellite company> DVR?
A: No, this will only work with Tivo Series 3, HD, HD XL, Premiere or Premiere XL boxes. These are the only DVRs with the ‘Network Remote Control’ feature that is required for it to work.
Q: Will this work with the Tivo Premiere or Premiere XL DVRs?
A: I have users that are using the Premiere and the app works. However, it currently does not autodetect them, so you will need to add the Tivo IP Address manually. Additionally, you may need to be using the SD menus (as oppossed to HD menus) for shortcuts to work properly. The next version of TivoRemote should correct this, and add support for the new Action buttons.
Q: TivoRemote won’t find my DVR!
A: There is a number of reasons why this may be, but here is the common fixes:
- Make sure you have a Wifi connection to your network on your Android device.
- Make sure you are not using a Guest Wifi connection – these typically only allow Browser/Web based traffic, and will not allow communication with your DVR TivoRemote uses port 31339 – if your router is blocking any incoming traffic, make sure to allow this port
- Make sure you have enabled the ‘Network Remote Control’ feature on your Tivo, located in your Tivo menus ‘Messages & Settings’, ‘Settings’, ‘Remote, Cable Card & Devices’, ‘Network Remote Control’
- Restart your Tivo(s) from the Messages and Settings menu. After the reboot, try disabling, and then re-enabling the Network Remote Control feature.
- If you have Tivo Desktop software or similar running, try turning it off temporarily.
- Add your Tivo manually under Settings. Click ‘New’, give the Tivo a name, such as ‘Living Room’, and type the Tivo IP address. If you don’t know your Tivo IP address, you can find it under ‘Messages & Settings’, ‘Settings’, ‘Phone & Network’
Q: Why is there no Volume Up/Down/Mute or TV Power buttons?
A: Tivo DVRs do not have any built in volume control, your sound is controlled by your TV or your surround sound. These buttons are learned by your Tivo remote using infrared. Since there is no direct control of these through Tivo, I cannot control them with TivoRemote. If Android devices had built in infrared, like regular remote controls, this could be done – but they don’t!
Q: The Shortcuts aren’t working!
A: Some shortcuts do not give a true ‘visual’ notification that they worked. For instance, the ’30 sec skip’ shortcut won’t seem to do anything – however, after using it – when you press the Skip Forward button, it will now only jump 30 seconds, instead of the standard jumping to the end/beginning of live viewing. Pressing the shortcut again disables this functionality. Make sure to read what the shortcut does to see if it is working properly. Some shortcuts are limited to when they can be pressed – i.e. you might not be able to do them while in the Now Playing list.
Q: Where do I place channel and shortcut logos on the sdcard?
A: The logos should be placed on your sdcard in a tivoremote folder. If you look at the contents of your sdcard, there should be a tivoremote folder (if not, create it). Within the tivoremote folder, you can place the logos named after the channel number(i.e. channel 123 would be 123.png) – or the shortcut name (i.e. 30 second skip.jpg). The current version only supports .jpg – an upcoming update will make this process much easier, and add support for other graphic formats.
Note: You will not see the logos until you unmount your sdcard (i.e. disconnect from your computer). You may even need to exit out of the channels screen and re-enter it to see the results.
