TivoRemote 1.5 Released

tivoremote_main

I have uploaded TivoRemote 1.5 to the market. This release includes a number of fixes and enhancements:

Added: User Created Shortcuts with sharing capabilities
Added: Animations
Added: Upgrade notification
Added: Implemented ErrorReporter
Fixed: Uses image compression to prevent crashing when using logos (not complete)
Fixed: Crash on Channels if no Tivo configured
Fixed: Tivo does not have to be setup to access Tivo Mobile
Fixed: Aspect button was missing on Peanut Fitted

User Create Shortcuts – Downloading and Uploading

I am really excited about the ability to create your own shortcut codes, and share them with other TivoRemote users!  Click the menu to create a new shortcut – give it a name, and for each button press, click  ‘Add’ to add it to the code.

When you are finished, and the code works well, long-click the shortcut and choose ‘Share’. This will allow other users to download shortcuts you have created! Make sure to check out the ones available to download, too!

Channels – Gridview

I added the ability to create a channel list, including logos in the previous version. But I wanted to make it look a bit nicer, so I give you… Gridview :) Just hit ‘menu’ and select ‘Switch Layout’ on the channels page.

  • Just wanted to say THANK YOU for this app. Saved me decent amount of cash and labor, so I didn't need to run IR repeater to the living room from bedroom. So far, works great, but for unknown to me reason, Aspect button does nothing at all. Hopefully you will get a chance to look at it.

I just bought this app for my new HTC Evo, does not work with my Tivo Series 3. Would welcome any feed back from Tim as how to get this app working. Thank you.
  • Gshepherd64
I purchased the program for my Droid yesterday, and it works pretty well. The one problem I found is that when searching YouTube through TIVO, the key board doesn't work properly no matter which first line I select. (Maybe becuase the first line actually has three options (not 4, 5, or 9).

Hi Tim, Just downloaded the app on my Droid. I am using it with a Tivo Premier and have problems with the keyboard. It seems like before it sends any commands to navigate the letters it is sending a "tivo" button push. So if I have it set on the keyboard- ready on the "A", it goes to the main screen, and doesn't get back to the keyboard (I think Premier may have an extra layer of menus.)
    Am I missing something? Thanks
  • Hi Chis,

This is definitely something I'll have to look into. The app itself attempts
to send either the 'Clear' button, or the 'Replay' button if the OSK has 5
columns (I don't recall but I think that is for the YouTube search?) - this
is to try and get the cursor back on its starting point. It seemed to work
for all of the search screens that I tested (including the Beta Search) but
I do not have a Premiere box.Can you tell me a couple things:

    1) Are you sure you selected the correct number of columns for the on screen
    keyboard before pressing send
    2) What screen are you attempting to search/type on?
    3) On that screen, does either pressing either clear or replay exit back to
    the Tivo menu?

If anyone else with Premiere boxes is having this issue, please feel free to
    chime in!
  • chris
    1) Are you sure you selected the correct number of columns for the on screen
    keyboard before pressing send
    << Yes, just triple checked
    2) What screen are you attempting to search/type on?
    << From Tivo Central-> Find TV, Movies, & Videos->Search
    3) On that screen, does either pressing either clear or replay exit back to
    the Tivo menu?
    <<clear but="" does="" does.<br="" not,="" replay="" the="">
    Thanks for looking into this.</clear>
  • chris
Is there a way I can use the keyboard without having it send the replay command?
    Thanks again
  • Hi Chris,

With the current app, that would not be possible.. I am reworking the entire
search piece - can I get you to do some testing for me? I'll contact you via
    email...

    Thanks,
    Tim

Purchased this program last week for my Droid Incredible. Doesn't work. If I need to try all the suggestions noted in the messages below, then maybe the software needs more work. Not recommended.
  • Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. Could you tell me if if you received
any error messages? Did you try manually adding the Tivo? The suggestions
below mostly are due to network behavior that are beyond my control in the
app. I'm looking into some possible solutions in the app itself to help out
    with some of these issues.

    Thanks,
    Tim

This program is a dream program. I would love to see it work. I have played with every conceivable config that I know. Maybe because I have three series 3 tivo's there is an interaction; however, I manually entered all of the data, and had only one result. "Can't find Tivo" For 99 cents, I won't ask for a refund, but wait for improvement. I really want this one to work. I have a wireless router 192.168.1.2 and a wired router at 192.168.1.1
Tivo's all show up, Enabling has been enabled. All Linksys equipment. What else can I do?
  • Mike
Followed all your instructions to the letter. Phone is correctly connected to home wifi. Tivos in house work fine on wifi. Just doesn't work (connect). Sad, but not the end of the world. Hope your next upgrade works.
  • What I found yesterday, after reinstalling Android 2.1 on my evo, that sometimes program will add spaces in IP addresses as you type. Backspace few times after every dot in IP address to make sure there are no spaces, and you should be good to go.
  • Hi Yuriy,

Thanks for that, glad you got it working! I thought I had corrected this,
but I will put it on my todo list for the next version.

using app on my droid. I can't get my app find my Tivo HD and when I enter the default name and ip address it still doesn't work. Yes, I turned on the network remote feature. I also went into my router and opened port 31339 but not sure if i needed to do it as TCP or UDP? tell me which one to use and if you have any thoughts on why i am not connecting.
  • Hi Laura,

For the port, it would be TCP. Some things you may want to try are listed on
the TivoRemote FAQ (http://timhoeck.com/tivoremote/), specifically try
restarting your tivo, and disabling, and then re-enabling the Network Remote
Control feature. Some routers also tend to block internal (LAN) traffic. If
you can tell me what type of router you have, I can probably help further.

Tivo remote worked on my previous Sprint Hero. On the new Hero, it does not seem to find my Series 3 HD Tivo manually or auto (times out). Usual suspects are taken care of: Wifi is on, Remte is enabled on Tivo, network IP address is correct
Do I need to chose peanut full, fitted or basic and call TIVO a name or let network find it. Tried all options,.
    What am I doing wrong?
  • Hi,

I responded via e-mail, hopefully that helps out...
  • yelloiroc
I am suffering from what seems to be the same issue. can you please give me any advice you might have. Also i know the tivo can be found on the network if i type the IP in the browser on the Hero the index page pops up.
  • Hi there,

The typical resolutions for these issues are as follows:

    1) Verify your Wifi is connected on your phone. Also make sure that you are
not connected to a "guest" access, which some routers have (that only allows
    web traffic)
    2) Verify that your Tivo IP has not changed. If you are using DHCP, you
might need to redetect your Tivo(s)
    3) Restart your Tivo(s), and then disable/re-enable the Network Remote
    Control feature
    4) Your router might be blocking the port that is needed for TivoRemote to
work. TivoRemote uses port 31339. Some routers block access to this port
even between LAN devices (your phone to your Tivo). You may need to open it.

Hey Tim. Love the app! Had a few questions though about the on-screen keyboard. With my Tivo HD, searching in YouTube, I find that the keyboard input works properly on the first try but subsequent searches are muddled. Often the previous search term will populate the input field before my new search term is tacked on the end. Other times the cursor will start in the wrong spot, turning my search term into gibberish. I'm, of course, being careful to select the proper number of columns and being sure to place the cursor on the 'A' at the start of my search.

Any thoughts what might be going on here? Was also wondering: since TiVo has announced some true keyboard support (and claims there's hardware on the way), is it possible to use that API instead of emulating keyboard input with the N,S,E,W, Select interface?

Keep up the good work. Best 99 cents I ever spent.

    -Ralph
  • Hi Ralph,

Yes, I definitely see the YouTube search issue... I'm unsure if this is
something odd in the way the YouTube search works, or something my app is
doing - sounds like the app, and I'll definitely look into it. Hopefully
that will fix the weirdness, but it is hard to make the keyboard search work
everywhere since Tivo incorporated so many different keyboard layouts. As
for a keyboard API, I doubt that they will update the Network Remote feature
to include that ability, but let's hope! :)

Tim, just bought the app last week and absolutely love it, been playing around with by my TiVo HDs and it works great.

The only thing I would improve is a way to add channels to the list without using the Android (txt or xml file)
  • Glad you are enjoying it! I'm not sure about adding channels without using
android, but I definitely want to make sure the channels are saved to the SD
card. We'll see what I can get implemented.

Ok, here's what I discovered about the shortcuts. I have a TiVo HD. All work for me except Football Filter (was really hoping for that one!) Netflix and 30 second skip. Would also like a way to remove a shortcut or somehow disable a shortcut (perhaps to be replaced by Restore Defaults?) Cause I can see myself accidentally hitting Standby! Again, great App! Two Thumbs WAY UP!
  • Hmm... I need to checkout the downloadable ones (Football Filter and
Netflix) since they weren't created by me.

The 30 second skip probably works, you just don't know it :P - it toggles
the Advance ( -->| ) button from its regular use (which jumps to the end or
beginning of your recording) to being a 30 second skip button. After you run
the shortcut once, when you press Advance, it should now skip 30 secs
forward, assuming you are not at the end of your recording. If you run the
shortcut again, it returns the button to its normal function... it's great
    for skipping through commercials.

You can remove shortcuts by long-clicking them to get a menu. If you remove
one that you didn't want to, you can re-download them.

Tim. Awesome App! Works great! Worth every penny (and then some). Curious why volume control is 'grayed out'/non-functional. Probably just not possible. Haven't tryed/figured out how to add channel list (is that like creating your own favorite channels?) Checking out the shortcuts now. Bravo! Tim, Bravo!
  • Hi,

Thanks a bunch...Yes, unfortunately, there is no built-in volume control for
the Tivo itself, and the volume is coming from your TV or your A/V receiver,
which the Tivo has no control over. I wish it did!

Yes, the Channel list lets you create a custom (favorite) channel list, and
optionally you can put the logos in a tivoremote folder on your sdcard, to
    make it look nice.

    Glad your enjoying it!
  • Ralph
Just so you know. I think TiVo has IR blaster functionality so it would be theoretically possible to control your receiver or TV volume from the WiFi interface, however you'd be required to buy an extra piece of hardware for your TiVo to make it IR out capable
  • I will look into the IR blaster, but I doubt that it will help me add volume
capability to the app, because the Network Remote feature does not allow you
to send the commands that would be needed, even if they exist internally.
It's a shame they didn't include IR in any Android devices... then we would
    be all set!
